The state park there is absolutely wonderful. There are many trails to hike through the woods...short trails, long trails, flat trails, hilly trails. We opted for a short, flat trail that is call the Flytrap Trail. Yep, named after the Venus Flytrap. A fascinating plant, really, and endemic to the area. We did not find any on the trail...they bloom earlier in the summer. We did see some yellow pitcher plants, also, very cool. Here's a picture.

sssssurpise on the trail
Okay, here's another sssstory about our trip to Carolina Beach.
Anyway, we walked our little trail and saw huge pine cones, little red flowers, and ...a snake! A jogger passed us and said "Be careful there's an S-N-A-K-E sunning itself on the path." So what do we do? Do we go the other way? No! We go look for it...and by we, I mean Tim, with us following him from a distance. Oh he found it alright. He couldn't really tell what kind of snake it was so, as always, he wanted to pick it up. Don't get me wrong, he knows how to tell the difference between venomous and non but it was a snake he didn't know. When he reached for the tail to pick it up it quickly turned around to strike at him!!! Holy snakebite, Batman! It missed him because he's got good reflexes, but scary none-the-less. Thank goodness I had my camera handy. I mean, what's a scary experience without pictures to prove it?! He did end up picking it up with a long stick so we could get a better look at it. That darn thing hissed, and tried to strike, and acted all crazy like a venomous snake. Well, later, after looking it up, we found out that it was an Eastern Hognose Snake. Feisty little guys that act like their venomous counterparts as part of their defense...had Tim kept messing with it, it would have eventually played dead as a last resort. So what an eventful little walk in the woods we had. We'll be more aware of our surroundings and all of it's potential creatures from now on!
Curled up ready to strike again!
Checking it out from a safe distance.

thankful thursday
Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; Sing praises to our God on the lyre, Who covers the heavens with clouds, Who provides rain for the earth, Who makes the grass to grow on the mountains. Psalm 147:7-8
one - rain, rain, and more rain! - It hasn't rained here since very early in July so I am so thankful for days of rain. I can already see the tomatoes in my garden smiling. two - beautiful babies - We had a play date with some dear friends the other day that was long overdo...great conversation for the moms, great fun for the kids, I mean really cute kids...here's their youngest, adorable right?!
three - new discoveries - The other day Miss O asked for one of the books high on
her bookshelf, you know, the books that are to be admired but not touched, especially by little sister. Well, I gave it to her, then minutes later she asked for another, then she started pulling all the Sweet Pickles books off the shelf that were mine when I was little. Books. Were. Everywhere. She came out of her room about 20 minutes later and said...."Mom! Mom! I can read everything on my shelf!" I, of course, knew she could all along, but she didn't have the want to sit still with books with more words than pictures (we all love a great picture book). She was so excited to discover it. She's only 5 years old and already has her nose in a book most of the time.

a moment of silence please
It has been made known to me (and Tim) that our beloved little green car will not be coming home again all fixed up, but instead will be taking our money with it as it eventually goes to that great junk yard in the sky county. Grrrrrrrr! More on this later....after the shock wears off.

new discoveries
1. I have discovered that I don't like to see paint brush lines when I paint. I've never really paid much attention to the trim before, but since I am painting it myself, I've been looking at it up close and personal. finishing the trim + perfectionism = anxiety! Husband to the rescue...small roller instead! I am so thankful I married a genius :o)
2. I have discovered that my tiger lilies are blooming! Orange is one of my favorite colors and lilies are my favorite flower. orange + lily = beauty
3. I have discovered that pools are fun for moms, too. The pool we got for the girls to play in this summer is big enough for all of us. 100 degrees + pool = relief
2. I have discovered that my tiger lilies are blooming! Orange is one of my favorite colors and lilies are my favorite flower. orange + lily = beauty
4. I have discovered that I am better as something than my husband...Wii Fit. It's a balance thing. my name + highest score = it's about time! He's better at just about everything else...and I'm okay with it, really!
5. I have discovered that one of my blogging friends,Zoe, is way better at sewing than she ever let on. You've got to go check out the great bag she just made. fabulous end result + picture to prove it = motivation to make something great!
