new to me

Well, I have been making some serious progress on the ol' crocheted stash basket. It's such a great pattern, and it's free...does it get any better than that? Anyway, I ran out of yarn so I had to get one more skein yesterday...my third one.(Lily Sugar n Cream 2.5oz skeins in cornflower blue) I, being quite new to crochet, have found this pattern easy to follow and very helpful when it comes to mastering counting stitches. I must say this project has helped me gain confidence in my crocheting abilities...that's new to me! Yes, it's a simple pattern but it's looking just like the picture...on the first try...without ripping out lots of rows to do them over...seriously! My Grandma is going to be so proud! :o) All I've got left to do at this point are the handles and then it'll be done. Yippee! As you can see from the picture it's already stuffed and ready for my next project. This basket is going on my Christmas project list, for sure.
Saturday morning my street had several yard sales. I've really been practicing restraint lately when it comes to yard sales. Ya know, I don't want to buy something unless I really need it so if I go to yard sales it's with something specific in mind. Well, today was different. With eight yard sales with in sight of my front yard I grabbed my girls and my wallet and we went to each one. I some some fabric at one...cute fabric, but overpriced so I walked away. I've got fabric and I'm really working hard at using what I've got before I spend money on anything new. I also saw a really cool javelin type spear with leather and feathers wrapped around it and a carved stone arrow. Hmmm...small children, long, sharp weapon...not a good combination so I passed on that one. The girls each got a new book for a whopping 25 cents and were absolutely thrilled so we walked back home. Well, a few hours later as our street was alive with activity we saw a good friend at the yard sale across the street. Our friend, Mrs. H., is like another grandma to my girls. When we go for walks in the afternoon we often stop by her house to say hello. She spoils the girls with hugs and ice cream. Well, now was our chance to have her come and sit on our porch for once. So as the girls jumped up and down with excitement I went to our neighbors yard to say hello to her and invite her over. She saw the girls and said she'd be right over...as soon as she finished her shopping. And that's when I saw it. A sewing machine. That wasn't there when the girls and I stopped by a few hours earlier. So I said to my neighbor in my very calm, nonchalant voice "Oh, I see you have a sewing machine...how much are you asking?" She said she didn't know how much it was worth, but she was pretty sure it worked, and for me she'd sell it for $10...I could test it and if it didn't work I could bring it back. Deal! By this time Mrs. H was done shopping and walked back across the street with me to shower my girls with hugs and kisses. We chatted for a moment and then she was on her way to the next yard sale. I quickly ran in and got some cash and headed back across the street. I handed her the money and took my machine...and she gave me some change! I only paid $7!! I quickly got out some fabric and gave it a try. It works! It's quiet! It was only $7. Oh, it's a Kenmore..a few years old, but certainly new to me. It's barely been used and it has all of the little tools and extras to go with it. It looked dusty and dingy when I got it, but with a little Mr. Clean and elbow grease it looks brand new! I can hardly wait to get sewing! I think my first project made on this machine will be a cover for it. So there you have it...things that are new to me. I hope you have a wonderfully blessed Sunday. Be sure to stop back in tomorrow for giveaway! xo ANG

what can YOU get with 75 cents?

I went to a couple of yard sales...big ones...in church basements...and I really hit the mother load!
First up: two huge balls of yarn...I'm pretty sure it's 100% cotton...it's not variegated...each strand is a different color...oooooohhhhh, nice! Price: 50 cents!!! I know! Crazy!
Second: I found this lone, vintage, sweet pillow case...white with pink and yellow flowers. I've been thinking about trying a pillow case dress for my girls like this, but since I only have one pillow case, maybe I'll make a skirt for myself...it is May(d) for Me time after all. I saw a really cute one in this book that was submitted by Regina of Creative Kismet. Oh, the price of the pillow case? A whopping 25 cents! Okay, that was my 75 cents. But there's so much more for you to see. What? How can that be?...you ask. Well, my dear vintage pattern lovers, I really REALLY hit it big!!!! The patterns I'm about to share with you were...........FREE!!!!! Yes, free. I walked into the church basement and before I even entered the room with all the goods I saw a little table with a box of patterns on it. I asked a very sweet elderly lady how much they were and she said oh, take as many as you like, they're free. Be still my heart! I was very cool about it....calm and casual, you see, for I didn't want to make a scene. I had it all under control, that is, until my big 6 year old said in her most excitedly loud voice "Whoa! My mom loves to sew and she loves patterns!" Ahem, yes these are lovely, I said in a nonchalant voice. Then again the lady said take them, I was going to throw them in the trash so take as many as you'd like. Trash? What? I had to rescue them...it was the right thing to do! Wanna see what I got? Do ya? Oh good, I'd thought you'd say yes. So feast your eyes on these.

Simple dresses and tops. Definitely some stash busters there.

Oh, and these. Three pieces and that's it?! Those should be a quick sew. And the one that makes you look slimmer! Who wouldn't want that?
And my personal fave...the western style shirt. It's a kids pattern...I should be able to shrink it down for my girls or make it bigger for me. With some great fabric these would be to die for! Am I right or am I right? I'm right, right?

Surprise! Two more dresses. I'm loving the two tone dress with the matching shoes. Oh, and the long pink one with the matching head wrap...I really love that. With some light and airy fabric that would be perfect for summer! I've got some sewing to do.

saturday....oh, what a saturday

This morning began with the plan for me to take the girls out so Dad could have a few hours of peace and quiet. Ya know, a little Father's Day gift of sorts. So off on our weekly trip to the great indoor playground. Ooohhh, but there were lots and lots of yard sales on the way. We stopped at a couple of them. I know, I don't like buying other peoples junk, but we found some great stuff! Look what I bought for $1.50...

$1.00

25 cents each

Okay, so then we went to the indoor playground. An hour of fun was enough for me them. Then we were off to find something great for Tim for Father's Day. As expected, they didn't enjoy the shopping very much, but we did find some great things that he will really enjoy. I do love buying him presents...even if it is with his money :o) It's the thought that counts, right? So we get home in time for lunch. Daddy enjoyed the peace and quiet and then decided to go out for a little while. I thought it was so he could do a little shopping for his Dad, but when he got home he had a present for me! For me?! But it's Father's Day weekend. The presents are supposed to be for him. He even got a pretty gift bag and tissue paper. Wanna know what the present is? Do ya? Do ya? Huh? Okay...here it is....

Gotta go.Manuel to read.Pictures to take.Oh, and dinner to fix.
